One of the most serious side effects associated with Actos (pioglitazone) is bladder cancer, which in some cases has led to death.  Subsequently, many diabetes patients or their families have filed Actos bladder cancer lawsuits across the United States and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Safety Announcement about the risk of Actos bladder cancer. Aside from bladder cancer, Actos may cause many other serious brand name and generic name side effects.

Some of the more serious Actos side effects include:

  • Heart failure
  • Fluid retention and peripheral edema, both of which serve as a precursor to congestive heart failure.
  • Liver problems, which for some has led to liver cancer.

Non-life threatening brand name and generic name side effects associated with Actos (pioglitazone) include:

  • Headaches
  • Muscle pain
  • Respiratory infections
  • Swelling of the hands, legs and feet
  • Sore throat
  • Mild weight gain
  • Anemia
  • Dental problems
  • Blurred vision
  • Changes in vision
  • Hypoglycemia (in patients taking insulin in addition to Actos)
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness

Female patients taking Actos have exhibited an increased risk of:

  • Bone fractures in the upper arms, hands and feet
  • Changes to menstrual cycle, which increases the chance of unwanted pregnancy.

If you have suffered any of the above Actos side effects, you should tell your doctor immediately.  You are also encouraged to report your adverse reaction to MedWatch, the FDA’s Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program and to, where you can share your experience with the prescription drugs you are taking and receive a free report to take to your pharmacist or doctor.

If you or a loved one has suffered bladder cancer as a result of taking Actos medication, you should contact an Actos bladder cancer lawyer right away.
